" The contrast in this country is truly striking—the clash between freedom and discomfort is overwhelming. If all you’ve experienced is the freedom of driving across the vast grasslands, without seeing the dangers people face dodging traffic just to get food, the nausea from walking over garbage dumps, or the stench of the pigsties, then you haven’t really been to Kenya. Or rather, you’ve been there, but you haven’t truly seen Kenya. You’ve only seen the side it wants to show you, never the side it hides. "
" The room is very dark and damp, with no lights. There's a distinct smell of mold in the air. From three-year-old kids to teenagers almost on the verge of adulthood, they’re all packed together, squeezed around tiny desks. The room has about eight desks, and on each one, they’re crammed together, shoulder to shoulder, trying to make space for everyone. "
As we worked together to clean up the place, there was one particularly remarkable little boy who stood out. His eyes sparkled with a unique light. He skillfully pushed a cart, loaded and unloaded trash, and collaborated with the other kids. He even took the lead, directing them as they worked together. His energy and determination were truly inspiring.
" His inspiration for starting this organization came from his own sister, who also has a disability. In the slums, families with children like her often face heavy discrimination. They’re too afraid to go outside, choosing instead to hide their children away at home. He decided to change this. Another reason was the high cost of treatment in big hospitals, which is unaffordable for people living in the slums. So, he established this center to provide free treatment for those in need. "
" I felt a sense of guilt for interrupting their classes, but their classroom was just like the children’s center—just as damp, just as devoid of light, and just as lacking windows. "
